How Do I Apply?
Applying for a Habitat Home is a thorough and detailed process. Partner Families are selected based on their need for housing, willingness to partner, and ability to repay a small, no-profit, and no-interest 25 year mortgage.
After an application has been reviewed and the Partner Family selected for the Homeownership Program, the process of purchasing and moving into a Habitat Home can take anywhere from 3 months to 2 years.
Step 1: Attend an Orientation Meeting
You must attend an Orientation Meeting that lasts approximately 45 minutes. The application process and the Homeownership Program, including its qualifications, are reviewed. Families are encouraged to ask questions.
Step 2: Schedule and Attend Pre-Screening Meeting(s) with Family Services, Inc.
Your ability to repay a small mortgage is calculated by conducting and reviewing a credit check, calculating your debt-to-income and housing expenses-to-income ratios, and reviewing your financial and credit history.
Step 3: Schedule and Attend a Meeting with Dorchester Habitat for Humanity
Once you have demonstrated an ability to repay a small mortgage, Family Services, Inc. will schedule a meeting with Dorchester Habitat for Humanity. Dorchester Habitat for Humanity will give you an Application to complete. The completed Application and requested documentation will be reviewed to determine if your family meets the Homeownership Program’s basic requirements.
