Youth

Building

Assists with house design criteria, materials, plans energy efficiency, and costs estimates. Works with the Site Selection Team to determine the need for land and to evaluate potential build sites. Meets Third Tuesday of Each Month, 8 AM, at the Dorchester Habitat for Humanity Office, 101 Greyback Road, Summerville 29483.

Construction

Experience is not required. If you don’t want to build but enjoy being on the construction site, a volunteer is needed. This person would help to make sure all volunteers are signed in and generally help the site supervisor.

Family Selection

Mentors partner families along with the Family Support Team. Develops processes and policies for selecting those persons in the greatest need in the community of decent and affordable housing. Coordinates and oversees new family application meetings and orientation seminars for new partner family applicants. Reviews applicant documentation and information to ensure compliance with all requirements. Meets Second Tuesday of each month, 7:30 AM, at the YMCA, 208 W. Doty, Downtown Summerville.

Family Support

Mentors partner families along with the Family Selection Team. After a partner family moves into their Habitat Home, the Team continues to assist the family in adjusting to new homeownership responsibilities. Plans and presents programs and events for Habitat Homeowners such as picnics, school supply drives, etc. Meets Third Saturday of each month, 9 AM, at Atlanta Bread Company, North Main Street, Summerville.

Grants

Researches potential foundations and other sources of grant funds. Prepares proposals and works with the Staff and other volunteers to prepare funding proposals. Meets Second Thursday of each month, 9:30 AM, at the Dorchester Habitat for Humanity Office, 101 Greyback Road, Summerville 29483.

Marketing/Public Relations

Builds awareness of and goodwill for Dorchester Habitat for Humanity. Works with the Staff to design and prepare promotional pieces, presentations, press releases, public service announcements, e-blasts, news articles, newsletters, website updates, and Facebook updates. Cultivates media contacts and networking opportunities. Meets the last Tuesday of each month, 10:00 AM at the Dorchester Habitat for Humanity Office, 101 Greyback Road, Summerville 29483.

Resource Development

Works with the Board of Directors and Staff to implement the fund development plan. Researches, plans, and implements activities to maximize opportunities for local businesses, corporations, and individuals to contribute. Organizes networking opportunities to cultivate and maintain new and existing partnerships. Meets in conjunction with the Special Events Team, the third Tuesday each month, at 12 pm at Atlanta Bread Co. 1114 N. Main St. Summerville.

Site Selection

Identifies land needs. Defines criteria for land donations and purchases. Seeks sources for land donations and heavily discounted property. Acquires land for building Habitat Homes. Works closely with the Building Team to determine the build-ability of identified land. Meeting time and place TBD.

Special Events/Fundraising

Plans and executes fundraising and advocacy events such as Harvest for Habitat, Oyster Roast, Cottage Tour, A Night at the Woodlands, special builds, groundbreaking ceremonies, and dedication ceremonies. Meets Third Tuesday of each month, 12 PM, at the Atlanta Bread Co. 114 N. Main St. Summerville.

Youth

Some of the projects available for youth groups include helping with special events, fundraising with their school, providing and serving lunches at the worksite, landscaping or repurposing items for the ReStore, or organizing sponsors and building sheds for the homes of partner families. Scouts, church youth groups, and school HFH clubs can all help support Dorchester Habitat for Humanity’s mission of “Putting God’s love into action by bringing people together building homes and hope” through assistance with these and other projects.
